Early years education: child development and service quality assessment resources for LB Southwark

The Southwark Quality Kitemark was launched in 2004 to assess the quality of early years education and play services in the London Borough of Southwark. We designed and produced a Quality Assurance Workbook as a nine-section ring-binder packaged in a box to contain other resources using polypropylene material. Illustrations were commissioned for the divider cards to reflect on the Module themes. We have designed and produced two further editions of the QA scheme rebranded as Pathways to Quality.

Early years services in Southwark also use our STAR (Southwark Transition and Assessment Resource) pack to assess children’s development.

Included in this pack are:

  • a ringbinder holding guidance notes and template assessment forms;
  • assessment forms as pdf files on a CD for printing on office equipment;
  • also on the CD, the forms as Word files for completing on screen;
  • sets of printed dividers for organising children’s records;
  • laminated sets of chain-looped assessment prompt cards.

The second edition of the STAR resource was published last year.

Parents of children with autistic spectrum conditions: resources for Barnardo’s award-winning Cygnet support programme

Barnardo’s Cygnet programme won a UK Skills Council National Training Award in 2010. ‘Richard Reeve Design was a vital component in the success of this programme,’ said Andy Morris, Cygnet Co-ordinator.

The core programme is delivered to a small group of parents by a trainer over five half-day sessions. The trainer uses a pdf slide show presentation and is supported by extensive trainer’s notes. The trainer’s resource includes over 220 slides, about half of which use original illustration, commissioned from andy pearson to give immediacy and emotional precision to often complex messages. The slides include video clips and animation and are packaged on a CD-ROM. Printed trainer’s notes are provided in ring-bound folders. The CD also contains pdfs for printing off note-sheets, handouts and activity sheets for parents.

Development of resources for Cygnet started in 2007. The second edition of the core programme was published in 2010. We have also designed modules to help parents support the siblings of their children on the autistic spectrum, and to train professionals. The Cygnet programme has proved popular; several hundred sets of programme resources have been sold and are in widespread use across the UK.
