University of Cambridge: keeping staff connected with the University with ‘Newsletter’ magazine

Newsletter - staff magazine for the University of Cambridge

Newsletter is the staff magazine for the University of Cambridge. Published bimonthly, we laid out and produced artwork for the magazine following its redesign by Esterson Associates in 2006 until the work was taken in-house in 2009. Midway through this period we refreshed the design to bring it into line with the University’s newly introduced visual identity.

Big screen entertainment: films and special shows coming up at the Phoenix Cinema, North London

Phoenix Cinema programme brochure

The Phoenix Cinema programme, published every two months, presents a varied programme of features, special matinees, children’s shows, film festival and other special events. The current design created in Spring 2008 shows a week’s programme on each page. The design combines tight typography with a fluid layout to generate visual interest from the programme’s variety while maintaining legibility.

Richard Reeve has enjoyed designing cinema programmes since working on the Brixton Ritzy A2 poster programmes of the 1980s and finds special pleasure in working with stills and reviews for films ranging from new releases to classics. The Phoenix Cinema on East Finchley’s High Street in north London is owned and run by an independent trust and has shown films continuously for over one hundred years. The Phoenix Cinema is a Grade XX listed building and has recently been refurbished following a successful fundraising campaign and matching lottery bid. Mark Kermode fell in love with film at the Phoenix, which he has describes as ‘My idea of heaven’! Yes, you do need to know this …
